Street photography is a method I use to record everyday life and people’s experience of it. It is like keeping a visual diary of the streets, where I capture candid moments, unique expressions, and the interplay between individuals and their surroundings.
This genre doesn’t require a studio, models or arranged settings. It thrives on spontaneity and my ability to notice and capture those fleeting, often overlooked moments that reveal the essence of society.
This portfolio contains a small selection of my street pictures. Some are candid, others see the brief relationship between subject and photographer as they look into my lens. All my images are exclusively made in black and white.
My street photographs tend to be lightly edited in the digital darkroom as I prefer to use my camera to influence the setting and emotion I strive to portray. Some are snapshots, others are more artistic.
Capturing individuals in a natural pose or event without influencing them can be challenging. I certainly do not like sticking a camera in someone’s face from a few metres away as I believe it then becomes a portrait or performance and an intrusion.
The understanding by some people about the right of others to photograph them is often misunderstood. In the UK it is acceptable to take anyone’s picture on public ground, with a few caveats. I always respect my subjects.
I often walk the streets with my camera, blending into the crowd, waiting for that perfect moment when the subject, other objects and the light align.
To deepen my understanding and see examples of street photography I explore the works of legendary photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, and Vivian Maier. Their work not only defines the genre but also demonstrates the impact street photography can have on our understanding of the world around us.
Websites like Magnum Photos are great resources for examining examples of good street photography within their galleries and articles.
In this, and the other portfolios, I have included a cross-section of my work to exhibit it’s diversity.
